Crime Victim Compensation

What Is Crime Victim Compensation?

Crime Victim Compensation (CVC) is a Colorado state-funded program that helps victims of violent crime cover certain out-of-pocket expenses. This program is not based on income and is available whether or not charges are filed against an offender. If you’ve experienced a crime, you’re not alone and you may be eligible for financial help to support your healing and recovery.

What Can It Help Pay For?

If approved, compensation can help cover:

  • Medical and dental treatment
  • Mental health counseling
  • Loss of wages due to injury or court proceedings
  • Funeral or burial expenses
  • Replacement of doors, locks, and windows damaged during a crime
  • Childcare needed so you can receive medical or legal support
  • Travel costs for court appearances or medical appointments

Who Is Eligible?

You may qualify if:

  • You or your family member were physically, mentally or emotionally injured or died as a result of a crime that happened in Colorado after July 1, 1982.
  • You are the victim of a crime in Colorado that resulted in damage to your residence.
  • You or your family are Colorado residents who were a victim of a crime resulting in injury or death that happened in a state or county that does not have a victim compensation program.

How to Apply

Clear Creek Advocates can guide you through every step of the application process. We’ll help you gather documentation and advocate on your behalf if needed.

To begin your application:

Colorado law requires you, or your family members, to apply to the victim compensation program in the judicial district where the crime occurred.  If you do not know what judicial district the crime occurred in, you can call the police or sheriff’s department where the crime was reported and ask.
