Recognizing the Signs
Bullying can have lasting psychological effects and children may be afraid or ashamed to talk about it. Knowing the signs and how to respond can make all the difference.
- Sudden changes in mood or behavior
- Avoiding school or social situations
- Unexplained injuries or damaged belongings
- Withdrawing from friends and family
- Trouble sleeping or eating
- Drops in academic performance
- Hesitation to use phones or computers
What You Can Do
Your support matters. If you suspect bullying, approach your child gently, validate their feelings, and remind them they are not alone.
- Start a conversation in a calm and private setting
- Listen without judgment or pressure
- Let them know it’s not their fault
- Discuss safety strategies (who to talk to, where to go)
- Document what’s happening (dates, names, incidents)
- Notify school personnel, if appropriate
- Connect with counseling or support services
When Violence is Involved
If bullying escalates into physical violence, threats, or harassment, take immediate steps to protect your child:
- Contact school administrators or district personnel
- File a report with local authorities, if needed
- Create a safety plan with your child
